Share this post:

League of Legends (LoL) has a massive, ever-expanding roster of champions, each defined by their unique strengths, playstyles, abilities, and roles. While every character has a distinct purpose in the game, it hasn’t stopped Summoners from finding new ways to pilot them in off-meta roles.

But how many champions are there in League? That’s where we come in! In this guide, you’ll learn about all the different characters, including how many exist and their classes. We’ll also explain how to unlock all the champs in LoL to fast-track your mastery of the Rift.

How Many LoL Champions Exist In 2024?

As of the latest LoL patch, there are 168 champions in LoL. The most recent addition to this lineup is Aurora, The Witch Between Worlds (July, 2024), with Smolder, the Fiery Fledgling before her (Jan. 31, 2024). The next champ is likely Ambessa Medarda from the Netflix series “Arcane,” slated to arrive in November 2024.

Each champion is assigned to one of seven classes: Slayer, Fighter, Mage, Marksman, Controller, Tank, and Specialist. These classes can be divided into subclasses to encapsulate a champion’s playstyle, abilities, and roles. Note: We bolded each sub-class.

Let’s discuss each of them in more detail.

Slayer

Slayers are hypermobile, high-damage champions in LoL. Their playstyle involves securing quick, easy kills before retreating into the shadows. The Assassin subclass is adept at infiltrating enemy backlines and bursting vulnerable or fragile targets. And then there are Skirmishers (or “Duelists”), who are less agile but have sustained damage and defensive spells to take down stronger foes.

Fighter

Fighters (or “Bruisers”) are generally short-range champions in LoL. They love being in the thick of battle and are known for their high damage. There are two subclasses: Divers are agile and focus on high-priority targets, while Juggernauts are slower, absorb a ton of damage, and hit like trucks!

Mage

Mages are offensive spellcasters in LoL, relying mostly on magic to damage or control crowds of enemies. There are three subtypes. Battlemages (or “Warlocks”) are squishy and burn through foes up close; Burst Mages can insta-kill vulnerable targets with devastating combos; and Artillery Mages are fragile but chip down enemies from a safe distance.

Marksman

Marksmen (or “AD Carries”) are the team’s DPS and among the strongest champions. They excel at damaging enemies from range, primarily using basic attacks. They tend to be quite fragile, so they rely heavily on item purchases to augment their attack damage and their teams to evade danger.

Controller

Controllers are defensive champions with strong utility and crowd-control abilities in their kits. The class is subdivided into Catchers and Enchanters. Catchers initiate fights and control enemy movements, while Enchanters have potent healing and shielding. These champs are most powerful in grouped combat.

Tank

Tank champions exist for one purpose: soaking up enemy fire. They are tough-skinned and have high resistance to burst, making them durable and difficult to kill. There are two types: Vanguards are offensive, initiating fights and locking down core enemies; Wardens are more defensive, protecting allies and holding down the line.

Specialist

Specialists comprise a unique group of champions in LoL. They have specialized kits that don’t exactly fit into other classes. They can deal serious damage but have advanced skill mechanics best reserved for high-skilled players.
