Playing as Mel in LoL: Gameplay Overview
While it is possible to play Mel in other roles, the Champion is perfect for the midlane. Her unique ability kit allows her to reflect projectiles and gain a buff, deal area-of-effect (AOE) damage, and crowd control. At the same time, her Ultimate ability opens up the possibility of global damage, and her Passive builds up stacks of a debuff that can execute players who aren’t paying attention.
Playing as Mel in LoL is all about applying pressure to your opponents, making the midlane the right fit. Instead of relying heavily on mobility or durability, Mel is all about hitting precise timings, taking advantage of enemy mistakes, and claiming an opportunity as soon as you see one.

All of her Abilities synergize exceptionally well, from her Ultimate’s bonus providing more damage to her Passive, to all her physical attacks and magical abilities adding stacks of her Passive on all targets hit.
So precisely does that mean for you? Given the amount of synergy at play, which provides opportunities for both defense and offense, Mel is great for beginners. At the same time, veterans can wreck Summoner’s Rift when taking full advantage of her kit.
To get you started on the right track, we’ve got a quick overview of how to play Mel in the midlane below, including Rune paths to begin with, the best LoL Summoner Spells for this Champion, and starting items as a core part of her kit.
- Choose Flash and Teleport as your Summoner Spells for increased mobility across the map.
- Go for Sorcery as your primary Rune path and Precision as your secondary path.
- The best Sorcery keystone Rune is Arcane Comet. Follow up with Manaflow Band, Transcendence, and Scorch. In the secondary path, pick up Presence of Mind and Coup de Grace.
- For Rune shards, get Ability Haste in Offense, Scaling Health in Defense, and Adaptive Force in Flex.
- Starting items are Doran’s Ring, a couple of Health Potions, and a Stealth Ward as your initial trinket.
- Build Blackfire Torch first. Other popular items (more on this later) include Crimson Lucidity boots, Shadowflame, and Rabadon’s Deathcap.
If playing Mel is starting to sound a bit complicated, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered, as we’ll now explore every gameplay aspect mentioned here in detail so you can become an unstoppable force in the midlane.
Mel’s Abilities Breakdown & Play Tips
Mel has a unique kit of abilities, a powerful passive, and an Ultimate that make her the perfect fit for a high-impact midlaner. Boasting execute opportunities through a stacking effect with her Passive, and unique projectile-reflection capabilities, Mel can take down many popular midlane champions, if her kit is used efficiently.
Let’s take a look at Mel’s kit, including mana cost, range, and cooldown per level.
| Ability Type | Ability Name | Cooldown (sec) | Mana Cost | Range |
| Passive | Searing Brilliance | N/A | N/A | N/A |
| Q | Radiant Volley | 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 | 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 | 950 |
| W | Rebuttal (Soul Mirror) | 35 / 32 / 29 / 26 / 23 | 80 / 60 / 40 / 20 / 0 | 250 |
| E | Solar Snare | 12 / 11.5 / 11 / 10.5 / 10 | N/A | 1050 |
| Ultimate (R) | Golden Eclipse | 120 / 100 / 80 | 100 | Global |
With these details in mind, we can now review Mel’s capabilities in LoL, starting with her Passive, then her regular abilities, and lastly, her Ultimate. To help you get started, we’ve included the official descriptions, additional details, and essential tips with each part of her kit.
Searing Brilliance (Passive) Explained
Playing Mel is all about keeping those stacks of Overwhelm up. It’s the core gameplay mechanic of her Searing Brilliance passive. Overwhelm can stack indefinitely, storing 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 (based on the current rank of her Ultimate ability, Golden Eclipse’s) (+ 10% AP) in Magic Damage. If the total damage stored (post-mitigating calculations) exceeds the shields + health of the target, the next hit will consume all the stacks of Overwhelm and execute the target. Yes, enemy Champions included.
Keep up those Overwhelm stacks on targets for an Execute. Mix in ability casts with regular attacks for the best result.
Official description of Searing Brilliance:
“Whenever Mel uses an ability, she gains three bonus projectiles (up to nine maximum) on her next attack. When Mel deals damage through an ability or attack, she applies Overwhelm, which can stack infinitely. If the enemy is hit by Mel with enough Overwhelm damage, the stacks are consumed to execute the target.”
Casting an ability also generates three stacks of Searing Brilliance for five seconds, which refreshes on subsequent casts, stacking up to nine times. Your next basic attack will consume the stacks of Searing Brilliance, firing additional projectiles at the target, dealing between 8-25 damage each based on your current level and AP.
The burst damage from Searing Brilliance projectiles is taken by the first hit enemy minion or Champion. Therefore, you must keep enemy Champion positioning and open angles past minions in mind to maximize poke damage potential. It’s a deadly dance that players need to master to get the most out of Mel.
Radiant Volley (Q Ability) Explained
Radiant Volley should be your first ability to max out. It’s your primary source of AOE damage and the best wave-clearing tool at your disposal, despite the magic damage dealt being reduced to 75% against minions.

Official description of Radiant Volley:
“Mel fires a barrage of projectiles that explode around a target location, dealing damage repeatedly to enemies within the area.”
Use Radiant Volley to keep Passive stacks up, adding pressure with a poke-and-push strategy to keep your opponents in check. Master the precise timing and angle of this ability to get the most from it. Try to clear a wave with Radiant Volley just before you shoot out the Searing Brilliance projectiles, ensuring you hit the enemy Champion.
Pro tip: You can use Radiant Volley to see through brush and terrain, since the bolts grant sight over the area as they travel and explode.
Rebuttal (W Ability) Explained
Rebuttal (W) is your primary defensive ability with Mel. It is arguably the most powerful and unique ability in her kit, creating a defensive barrier for a small timing window, reflecting enemy projectiles (not including turret damage), and providing a movement speed bonus. The caveat is that the protective barrier lasts for only 0.75 seconds.
Official description of Rebuttal:
“Mel forms a barrier around herself that reflects enemy projectiles back at the attacker, prevents her from taking damage, and grants her movement speed.”
All projectiles from enemies are immediately destroyed on contact with the barrier. Mel can fire the same projectiles back at the enemy or towards herself for buffs. All damage from the projectiles is converted to Magic Damage, so it can scale efficiently with popular Mel item builds.

Our top tip is to use Rebuttal sparingly, saving it for either dire moments or to finish off an enemy Champion. Use it to nullify the most powerful of enemy abilities. As enemy Champions reach level 6, you can instantly counter their first ultimates (if they are projectile-based). Once you level up the ability, its cooldown decreases from 35 all the way down to 23 seconds, and the mana cost goes down from 80 to zero.
Pro tip: At a high skill level, Mel players may use the Rebuttal to move in front of an enemy ability quickly, reflecting it to save an ally. It has high playmaking potential to consider in teamfights, and mastering it can open up a ton of possibilities.
Solar Snare (E Ability) Explained
Solar Snare is your primary crowd control ability, with a relatively low level 1 cost of 50 mana and a cooldown of 12 seconds, which goes down as you level up.
Official description of Solar Snare:
“Mel fires a radiant orb forward, rooting those at its center while the area around it slows enemies and deals damage over time.”
Since the Solar Snare ability features a center-based root, good positioning and aiming are essential to get the maximum effect. For example, aiming Solar Snare in the retreat path of a wounded enemy can spoil their day. It’s also fantastic in confined spaces around objectives in the Jungle.
Golden Eclipse (E Ultimate Ability) Explained
Mel’s Ultimate ability, Golden Eclipse, has a high cooldown (120 to 80 seconds depending on level) and is situational in its use, rewarding patient players who keep applying stacks of Overwhelm to their enemies. It also passively increases the damage stored by Overwhelm stacks, improving the effectiveness of the Champion throughout the entire match.
Official description of Golden Eclipse:
“Mel strikes all enemies marked with Overwhelm regardless of their distance from her, dealing additional damage for each stack of Overwhelm. Ranks of Golden Eclipse increase Overwhelm’s damage.”
To get the most from Golden Eclipse, Mel players should continuously poke at the enemy, keeping the Overwhelm stacks up in the five-second timing window. The Golden Eclipse damage scales higher the more stacks of Overwhelm are on the target. When timed perfectly, you can execute an enemy Champion who falls below a certain amount of health.
While there must be an enemy Champion affected with Overwhelm to cast the Golden Eclipse ability, the target does not have to be visible to get hit. Keep this in mind as you can hunt for killing blows if enemy targets are low enough, despite having no current vision of them.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Mel Mid
In LoL, no Champions are perfect. Every single one has strong points and weaknesses that players must understand to overcome. With that in mind, check out the strengths and weaknesses of Mel.
Mel’s strengths:
- Ability to negate high-damage projectiles, including Ultimates.
- Can execute low-health targets.
- Substantial AOE damage and crowd control.
- Significant map presence due to her Ultimate
- High burst damage potential.
Mel’s weaknesses:
- Mana management can be troublesome, especially in the early game.
- Her mobility isn’t great, leaving her vulnerable early on.
- Ultimate can only be used if the condition (enemy Champion marked with Overwhelm) is met.
Mel personifies the sentiment of “easy to learn, difficult to master.” There’s a high skill ceiling for pro players to achieve, but newbies can still deal decent damage and contribute to a match by just throwing out their Abilities and constantly attacking.
Mel is weak against enemy Champions that do not rely on projectile-based abilities. When her Rebuttal is less effective than usual, her power level does see a notable drop. However, through optimal build strategies and itemization, you can still win as Mel, no matter who your opponents are.
Optimal Build Strategies and Itemization for Mel
The optimal build for Mel in the midlane is to max out Radiant Volley (Q) first for high damage bursts in teamfights, followed by Solar Snare (E) and Rebuttal (W), while upgrading your ultimate as soon as the option becomes available. The table below gives you a quick overview of how your build should look in each match.
| Mel’s Abilities | Max Order | Leveling Order |
| Q – Radiant Volley | 1st | 1, 4, 5, 7, 9 |
| E – Solar Snare | 2nd | 2, 8, 10, 12, 13 |
| W – Rebuttal | 3rd | 3, 14, 15, 17, 18 |
| R – Golden Eclipse | – | 6, 11, 16 |
Pick Flash and Teleport as your Summoner’s Spells. For Runes, start in Sorcery and pick up Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, and Scorch. In the secondary Precision board, pick up Presence of Mind and Coup de Grace.
Now for the itemization. Item builds change with time. For the most part, as long as you focus on items that increase Mel’s magic damage output, alongside decent boots, you should play well.
However, we know that many players want a specific item build to follow for their first bunch of matches. With that in mind, check out our suggested best itemization for Mel below.
- Start of match: Doran’s Ring, x2 Health Potions, Stealth Ward
- Early game: Boots and Lost Chapter
- Mid game: Blackfire Torch, Liandry’s Torment, and Sorcerer’s Shoes
- Late game: Shadowflame, Rabadon’s Deathcap, Zhonya’s Hourglass, Blackfire Torch, Liandry’s Torment, and Sorcerer’s Shoes
As you become more accustomed to the Mel build, we suggest experimenting with a few other item choices depending on the match situation, such as picking up a Void Staff, Seraph’s Embrace, Cosmic Drive, or Cryptbloom.
Please note: Balance changes to Champions, items, and Runes could impact optimal itemization and build strategies for Mel. Keeping this in mind, we’ve ensured longevity by selecting robust builds that should withstand multiple patches.
Power Spikes and Timing: When Mel is Strongest
If you follow the Mel build and itemization with precision, you should notice a few huge power spikes from the Champion. Check out a quick breakdown of the power spikes, timing, and conditions below.
- Early game power spikes: First spike at level 4 when she has all her abilities online, and a 2nd point in Radiant Volley for higher damage output. Second power spike when her Ultimate comes online at level 6, bolstering her Overwhelm stack damage and giving her a global presence.
- Mid game power spikes: Next spike is at level 9, when she has her Q ability maxed out for high damage and wave-clearing speed, and at level 11, her Ultimate further scales her passive damage. Her last mid-game power spike occurs as soon as the player gets both the core items: Liandry’s Torment and Blackfire Torch.
- Late game power spike: At level 16, she gets the final level of her Golden Eclipse, making her passive extremely powerful, and her Ultimate ability a global threat.
Let’s keep these power spikes in mind as we move on to gameplay strategy across all phases of a LoL match as Mel.
Strategy and Gameplay Across All Game Phases
Mel gets progressively stronger in a LoL match, and the gameplay strategy becomes more aggressive. Check out the general gameplay strategies for each of the three phases below.
Early Game (0-15 Minutes)
It’s all about staying safe and alive in the early laning phase. Your goal is to farm gold and level up, using your Radiant Volley and Solar Snare to poke at the enemy midlane Champion while also clearing waves. As you rank up your Solar Snare, call on your Jungler to help secure a few kills.
Dance around the minions to poke your enemy with the Searing Brilliance projectiles, choosing when to perform your basic attack. The more of these projectiles hit the enemy champion instead of minions, the higher your health advantage in the midlane could become. This can force the enemy Champion back to base, which in turn results in an XP and Gold advantage.
Mid Game (15-25 Minutes)
In the mid game, Mel can focus on objective-based gameplay, joining her squad in teamfights, and taking down Baron and Dragon. You’ll still stand at the back in teamfights to dish out your damage, moving forward momentarily to hit enemy Champions with those Searing Brilliance projectiles.
You’ll counter high-damage enemy spells and Ultimates with Rebuttal. Take advantage of her power spike once you get Liandry’s Torment and Blackfire Torch, pushing through the midlane with your power boost, and dealing a ton of damage after level 2 of your Ultimate at Champion level 11 comes online.
Late Game (25+ Minutes)
In late game, always stay with your team. Mel is a high-value target that can dish out a lot of damage quickly, but also falls to a gank with ease, due to her limited mobility and only Rebuttal as a defensive ability.
We recommend staying behind your teammates in fights, blowing up enemy players from afar. Jump on opportunities to use your global Ultimate to secure kills on vulnerable enemies, and ask your teammates to keep an eye on low-health enemies so you never miss a chance to score a kill with Golden Eclipse.
Maximizing Damage with Mel’s Passive
If you struggle to maximize the damage dealt by Mel’s Passive, you are not alone. It requires a lot of practice and commitment to become the best Mel player you can be, and subsequently dominate the midlane. Without dealing maximum damage to your opponent in the midlane, you will fall behind as the match progresses.
So, how exactly do you maximize damage with Mel’s Passive? We boiled it down to five tips.
- Keep Overwhelm stacks up on enemy Champions with regular attacks. If an enemy moves out of range or regular attacks, throw a Radiant Volley or Solar Snare.
- After casting an ability, it creates three stacks of Searing Brilliance for five seconds, which refreshes on subsequent casts, stacking up to nine times. Always keep an eye on the stacks to ensure you don’t waste them on minions.
- Use Solar Snare, Radiant Volley, and Rebuttal last for three stacks, using the movement speed boost to get in front of the minions, with a clear path to bursting the enemy Champion.
- Dance around minions so that your projectiles from Searing Brilliance will hit your preferred target. Always keep an eye on the enemy Champion’s positioning.
- If an enemy gets away on low health after level six, use your Ultimate to potentially secure a kill. Pay close attention to the fatal damage bar that appears on enemy Champions so you know when to smash that R button.
Efficiently keeping up the Overwhelm stacks and hitting Champions instead of minions with those Searing Brilliance spikes is tricky, requiring a lot of practice to get right. By following these tips, however, you should start seeing an improvement right away.
Efficient Mana Management
Mel is a mana-hungry Champion, so some players will struggle to manage the resource effectively. Thankfully, the deeper you get into a build, the less of an issue mana management becomes. We suggest using Radiant Volley and Solar Snare when an opportunity to clear a wave while also damaging an enemy champion becomes available.
Use the Rebuttal sparingly at the start of the game. As you level up, Rebuttal’s mana cost goes down, costing zero at max level. Before Rebuttal is free to use, you should always keep your mana high enough to cast it, as it’s your only defensive ability.
At the heart of mana management with Mel is an all-important Rune under the Sorcery path. Without it, running out of mana can become an issue for Mel players. We are, of course, talking about the invaluable Manaflow Band, which you should pick 100% of the time.
In the Precision path, choose Presence of Mind. With this Rune, you will get some mana back when damaging enemy Champions, and takedowns will restore a whopping 15% of your total mana.
Combating and Countering in Jungle/Objective Areas
Mel’s kit is perfect for fighting in confined spaces, which includes nearly all important Jungle objectives.
Her AOE abilities become more effective due to the limited amount of space for enemies to dodge. A well-placed Solar Snare can turn the tide of battle in the Jungle, controlling her enemies with ease.
She can hit multiple enemies at once with her AOE, especially around Baron and Dragon. If you have some Champions on your side that provide hard crowd control lockdown, such as Rell with Magnet Storm, you can combo to take out multiple enemies at once.
Just watch out that opponents don’t counter you by baiting out your Rebuttal with a low-impact projectile, leaving you open to damage. As Mel, you are vulnerable to highly aggressive Champions that can jump on you quickly for a takedown, so we recommend staying in the backlines to dish out the damage safely.
