NIP’s History

Ninjas in Pyjamas is a major name in esports, and it all started in June 2000 as a Counter-Strike team by Tommy “Potti” Ingemarsson and Christoffer “Tootzi” Olsson. Despite an initial victory at the CPL Winter Championship, the core roster was acquired by SK Gaming, which left NIP dormant.

The team resurfaced in 2005, only to again vanish by 2007. NIP’s legendary revival came in 2012 by signing notable pro gamers and achieving an 87-0 map win streak. Their status solidified when they won ESL One Cologne 2014 after narrowly missing two Majors. However, roster changes disrupted their momentum.

Despite periodic victories, Ninjas in Pyjamas struggled to reclaim their once-dominant position in Counter-Strike. They went on to diversify with the NIP Rainbow Six team, who became world champions in 2021. As of 2023, they’ve entered a promising phase with a multi-year partnership with Razer.

Evolving from a humble Counter-Strike team to a global esports titan, NIP has garnered fans worldwide, housed many of esports’ best players, and set unmatched records. Ninjas in Pyjamas’ legacy remains unparalleled in the esports realm.

NIP’s Greatest Accomplishment

In the earliest days of CS:GO, Ninjas in Pyjamas stormed the esports scene with an awe-inspiring 87-0 LAN map streak. That iconic record has become CS:GO folklore and a significant piece of esports history.

From August 2012 to April 2013, NIP didn’t drop a single map across ten tournaments. The star roster included Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund, Richard “Xizt” Landström, Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg, Adam “friberg” Friberg, and Robin “Fifflaren” Johansson, affirming NIP’s dominance from the get-go.

Many contenders from CS 1.6 hadn’t yet transitioned to Counter-Strike, giving NIP an unprecedented advantage. But the sheer brilliance of 87-0 isn’t merely a product of this transition delay. Teams struggled to find NIP’s kryptonite, even with Counter-Strike’s limited map pool.

It was only at StarLadder Star Series V that Virtus.pro toppled the European goliath. NIP’s record, which was a blend of impeccable skill and fortuitous timing, stands unmatched and is an emblem of their once-untouchable prowess. But it doesn’t stop there.
