Unveiled during VALORANT Champions 2023, Sunset commands attention and echoes the cries of Reyna, “Kingdom bleeds our planet once again. Too many scars to count.” That said, put an end to your loss streak and leverage these game-changing tips and tricks to tilt the odds of success in your favor!

Sunset VALORANT Map Overview

Added in v7.04, Sunset is set in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights. In an interview with IGN, lead map designer Joe Lansford explained that VALORANT’s Sunset map drew inspiration from Riot Games’ hometown, featuring graffiti from LA street artist ATLAS and the Canadian 123KLAN crew.

Marked as the game’s tenth map, Sunset offers two Spike plant sites and three lanes, mirroring earlier maps like Ascent and Haven. It was added to the Competitive and Unrated map pool with Breeze on Sept. 6 2023, replacing Fracture and Pearl in Episode 7 Act 2.

Sunset is a junction of explosive combat that throws players into a narrative of a secretive Kingdom facility and a mysterious sinkhole. It also features a mechanical door between B Market and Mid Courtyard, with eerie announcements echoing from various spots around the map.

How To Attack On Sunset

Attacking on Sunset is challenging due to its inherent defender-sided nature. It demands strategic movements and utility usage. Here are a few general tips to consider when you’re on the attacking side.

A Site

The A Site is an interesting starting point for the attacker side because the defenders lack solid positions to hold, which gives attackers an advantage. One tactic may involve rushing the A Site to force the defender players back, pushing them into awkward positions, and gaining control of every angle you can.

However, faking a split is another way to attack A Site on Sunset. This method uses diversion tactics, like creating noise at B Site to draw enemies out while another player quietly pushes on A Site. Whichever tactic you use, leveraging utility is crucial. Smokes are pivotal in cutting off visibility and facilitating a safer plant.

B Site

Focusing on Mid control is vital—you alleviate the threat of entering B Site by gaining control of B Market. An effective approach may be using a 1-3-1 setup with utility to control key areas on Sunset, such as tossing smokes deep in the corners of Market to ensure defenders cannot counter the attack.

However, avoid disadvantageous plant spots. Plant the Spike in open and safe locations like the B Backsite, so they become more defendable during post-plant situations. Again, Mid Control is an essential aspect of attacking because it provides quick routes for rotation and the ability to pressure both sites effectively.

How To Defend On Sunset

Just like on any map, a strong defense on Sunset in VALORANT involves effectively countering the attackers’ strategies. But how exactly do you do that?

A Site

Controlling A Lobby and A Main is imperative, because it’s the only direct path onto A Site. Losing control over this area will result in attackers splitting into the A Site. The only acceptable time to leave is if the attackers overwhelm you or if early aggression works in your favor by you gaining an early kill.

Likewise, holding A Link is paramount. A key defensive strategy is leveraging utility to its full extent, including throwing Recons through the windows in A Main and posting up an Operator to earn easy kills. This control over A Main is incredibly important, and losing it complicates the defense significantly.

B Site

B Site is a complex area to defend because of the multiple angles the attacker side can leverage. However, there are many angles that defenders can also exploit. A robust defense could include anchoring the site with a Sentinel to buy time for rotations.

Intel-gathering utilities like Sova’s drone or Sky’s flashes can also prove useful in anticipating and responding to counteracting attacks. Mid control is crucial for attackers and defenders alike. Fast flanks enabled by Mid control can be a game-changer.

Deciding whether to keep the Market door open or closed can significantly impact control over Mid and, by extension, the entire map. In essence, a balanced use of utility, strategic positioning, and quick adaptability are the main elements for a successful defense on Sunset.

Best Agents To Use On Sunset

Need help finding the perfect lineup? No problem. While it’s still early days for Sunset, these are some of the best Agents to use on the new VALORANT map:

Duelists

Jett and Raze are your go-to options thanks to their high-damage output capabilities. They’re also agile and effective in controlling highly contested areas like Mid and A Site. Not to mention, Jett is a formidable Operator handler who excels at holding angles and getting kills.

Controllers

Pro esports teams will likely rock a Controller like Viper and Astra. Notably, Viper’s vision-blocking abilities are vital for Mid control and asserting dominance on Sunset. Harbor is also a viable pick, particularly for using his Cascade to block off angles in offensive and defensive scenarios.

Initiators

Information is power, and that’s where Skye, Sova, and Fade come into play. Specifically, Skye’s healing and intel gathering, Sova’s recon abilities, and Fade’s capacity to disrupt enemy lines provide teams with the strategic depth to navigate and control Sunset’s intricate landscape.

Sentinels

Chamber is a popular meta pick, exploiting players’ initial unfamiliarity with Sunset’s diverse angles and pathways. However, as players become more versed, Killjoy and Cypher are expected to rise in prominence, thanks to their superior control utilities.
