How To Change Your League of Legends Name

Share this post:

There are many reasons why Summoners may want to change their name in Riot Games’ ever-popular League of Legends (LoL). Some gamers may regret their initial name choice, while others simply wish for another moniker to represent them in Summoner’s Rift.

If you want to change your name in LoL, our in-depth guide has got you covered. We’ll explain the process of changing your Riot ID in five easy steps and then share additional important information, such as how often you can do a LoL name change, the rules you must follow, and if there’s an extra cost involved.

Changing Your LoL Name In Five Steps

On Nov. 20, 2023, the Riot ID system replaced the Summoner Names system in LoL. As a result, a player’s Riot ID combines their “Game Name” and a “Tagline” to create one Riot ID. For example, a player could choose the name “ThunderpickRules” and the Tagline “#TWC24,” which combine for a Riot ID “ThunderpickRules#TWC24.” Below are the steps to quickly change your LoL name via Riot ID settings.

● Close both LoL and the Riot Launcher.
● Open your preferred internet browser and visit the official Riot Games Account page.
● On the left-hand side of your screen, click on the “Riot ID” tab.
● Enter your preferred LoL “game name” between 3 to 16 characters in length.
● Click on the “Save Changes” button.

With Riot ID, there can be hundreds of “ThunderpickRules” names in LoL as long as they have different Taglines. Basically, Riot has created a more robust system that offers gamers more choices. According to Riot, under the old Summoner Name system, it took players an average of five minutes and eight rejected attempts to pick a unique name, which meant that a lot of people abandoned the process.

How To Change Your Riot ID Tagline

You can follow the same steps to change your Tagline as you would to change your Riot ID name. Your Tagline always starts with a # followed by 3 to 5 alphanumeric (letters and numbers) characters, so you can choose a combination of letters and numbers, for example, #TWC24, which points towards the exciting Thunderpick World Championship 2024 event.

Pro tip: While changing your Riot ID, we suggest securing your account with Two-Factor Authentication. The additional security options are on the left side, just below your Riot ID. Remember to always use a secure, unique password to decrease the chances of losing access to your account.

LoL Game Name Rules

Both portions of your Riot ID, the “Game Name” and the “Tagline” are alphanumeric. The Game Name is between 3 and 16 characters long, while the Tagline is 3 to 5 characters long. Riot Games provides LoL players with much freedom while selecting their in-game name.

However, there are some clear limitations because your LoL name should not be offensive or inappropriate. Per an official post from the developer, you’ll find a broad list of what Riot Games considers offensive or inappropriate for Riot IDs below.

● “Implied or blatant hate speech, offense, harm, violence, or harassment towards individuals or an identity group (e.g., cultural, racial, gender, social, religious, political, national, and so on).
● Explicitly attacking social causes or political views.
● Sexual content that is violent, obscene, criminal, or vulgar.
● Profanity and referencing hard drugs or underage illegal anything.”

If your name is deemed offensive and the developers ask you to change your Riot ID or Tagline, please choose your new handle carefully. Repeat offenses can result in additional penalties to your account and, in some extreme cases, even a permanent ban or account deletion.
As a rule of thumb, we suggest not pushing your luck. If you think your wordplay or puns are too close to the edge or you’re trying to sneak in offensive language using clever spelling, take a step back and pick something else.

Does It Cost Money To Change Your LoL Name?

No, changing your LoL name does not cost money. However, there is a lot of confusion and misinformation online about the cost of changing your Riot ID.

As mentioned in this guide, Riot Games moved to a Riot ID account system featuring a name and Tagline for all their titles, including LoL. Previously, LoL players had “Summoner Names” representing their in-game nicknames. Players could purchase additional name changes for 1300 RP, which costs roughly $10. LoL players could also change their name for a whopping 13,900 Blue Essence.

While discussing the Riot ID plans, the developers did indicate modifications could occur in the future if necessary:

“Under our new plan, we think we found the right balance with time alone. If it turns out this approach isn’t hitting the right goals, we’re keeping the door open to modifications in the future, including adding paid or earned options for faster Rioter ID changes.”

While you cannot purchase additional LoL name changes since Nov. 20, 2023, many guides and videos on the internet have not been adequately updated and still suggest you can use real money to purchase a Riot ID change.

How Often Can You Change Your LoL Name?

You can change your name in LoL every 90 days. There’s no way to speed up the process at the time of writing. With the move from Summoner Names to the Riot ID system, Riot saw the one-year (365 days) option as too long and the one-month option as too short, explaining:

“You should have a connection to your name, but we never want you to feel stuck with a name you don’t like. 365 days is a long wait, and based on last year’s data, three months should be a good sweet spot.”

If you have a good reason for wanting to change your LoL name with haste, such as making a terrible spelling mistake, you could contact Riot Games’ Customer Support and submit a ticket. We don’t guarantee success with this method, but the support team may allow for an additional free name change.
