How To Unlock Premier CS2

Premier mode is the closest thing to playing on the big stage in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2). With map vetos, strict rules, and a global leaderboard, it’s literally built for players who take the game seriously. But unlike Competitive, you can’t jump in right away—it’s locked behind a few requirements. This guide breaks down exactly how to unlock Premier CS2, including what you need to play, how the ranking system works, and why it’s a cut above the rest.

What Is CS2 Premier Mode?

Premier is CS2’s most cutthroat mode, designed to closely mirror pro-level play. It launched during Operation Broken Fang on Dec. 3, 2020 as part of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). Back then, it was meant to be a limited-time mode, but its massive popularity made it a permanent staple.

What Is The Point Of Premier In CS2?

What sets Premier apart from other playlists, especially Competitive, is how it resembles the professional experience in a public-ranked setting. Specifically, the pre-match map veto system offers players strategic depth before the game begins, while standardized match rules make matches feel more consistent.

Beyond this, every player is assigned a Counter-Strike Rating (CSR or CS Rating) instead of being lumped in a vague tier like Gold Nova or Global Elite. This, together with global ranked leaderboards, gives players a sense of prestige and, more importantly, a reason to grind.

How To Unlock Premier CS2 by Paying for the Mode

Premier is not available by default. The only way to unlock it is by purchasing CS2’s Prime Status Upgrade. This add-on is available in-game or via the Counter-Strike 2 store page on Steam for $14.99. After purchasing, you’ll gain access to Premier, but only if your account level is high enough.

With Prime Status, you will only be matched with and against other Prime Status players. You’ll also get other benefits, like bonus XP, Competitive Skill Groups, Counter-Strike Rating, and weekly care packages (these include exclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases).

Note: If you purchased the Legacy Prime Status in CS:GO, it transferred automatically to CS2.

What Account Level Is Required To Play Premier?

You must be at least Sergeant Rank 10 to play Premier in CS2. This means accumulating a total of 45,000 XP by playing matches in any of the other game modes.

Competitive matches offer the highest XP per game (30 XP * rounds won), but they’re not the most efficient considering most matches last 30-60 minutes. For this reason, Wingman (15 XP * rounds won) is better. They wrap up in 15-20 minutes, making them the fastest way to stack XP.

Can You Unlock CS2 Premier For Free?

Unfortunately, Premier is no longer free to access. While it was briefly available to all players after the March 29, 2021 update, that access ended on April 30, 2021. The only way to play Premier mode in CS2 now is to buy the Prime Status Upgrade or to have purchased the Legacy Prime Status in CS:GO.

How Does Premier Work In CS2?

Premier uses a strict MR12 (max rounds 12 per half) format and is restricted to the Active Duty map pool. You also cannot queue for specific maps. Instead, players pick and ban maps in a pre-match veto phase. While you can solo or party queue, there are stricter matchmaking rules than in Competitive.

CS2’s Premier mode feels a lot like playing an official tournament game. It features a longer freeze time, three tactical timeouts per team, and overtime if the game draws 12-12. Beyond that, everything is more structured and intentionally designed for serious play, just like the pros!

Pick Ban System

Before a Premier match begins, players load into a special lobby to do a six-step map veto process. At each stage, all players vote, and the majority decision for each team is used. Here’s how it plays out:

  • Step 1: Teams pick first ban or starting side (12s)
  • Step 2: Two maps are banned (25s)
  • Step 3: Three maps are banned (25s)
  • Step 4: The final map is banned (25s)
  • Step 5: Teams pick the starting side on the chosen map (12s)
  • Step 6: The match begins

How Does The CS2 Premier Ranking System Work?

Premier uses an Elo-based CSR matchmaking rating, which is basically a rank specific to Premier. This numerical score is exclusive to all other modes and is only assigned after winning 10 placement games. After that, your rating adjusts after every match, increasing with wins and lowering with losses.

Similar to other ranking systems, the amount your CSR changes depends on your performance (e.g., K/D) and the strength of your opponents. For example, beating higher-rated teams will result in larger gains, while losing to lower-rated squads will cause steeper drops.

Can You Lose Your Premier Rank In CS2?

Yes. Valve applies a soft decay to CSR if you don’t play Premier after a few days, even if you play other game modes. While the exact timeframe isn’t clear, many players report losing their rank after 7-14 days of inactivity. Your rating will also need to be recalibrated at the start of a new Premier season.

Is Premier Or Competitive Better In CS2?

That really depends on your preference. You may prefer Competitive if you want to pick specific maps, are taking a break from ranked, or aren’t bothered by global rankings. However, Premier may be best if you prefer a more pro-like experience, want balanced matches, or play with a team.

Both game modes share a lot in common as far as their competitiveness is concerned. You can see the similarities and differences between Premier and Competitive below.
