There are two primary CS2 game modes specifically designed for players who want to elevate their esports skills: Competitive and Premier.

Let’s discuss Premier vs. Competitive mode in CS2, exploring the key differences in rankings systems, map selection, and advantages of each mode. We also compiled an FAQ section so you can better determine which mode is right for you.

What’s the Difference: CS2 Premier vs Competitive at a Glance

Both Competitive and Premier mode use the MR12 (Max Rounds 12 per half) system, down from MR15 in CS:GO, with team damage and collision enabled in bomb plant/defusal gameplay. This creates competitive matches that help players improve their CS2 skills. That being said, there are significant differences between the two modes.

CS2 Premier mode uses a unified rating system, where the “CS Rating” indicates the player’s skill. On the other hand, Competitive features map-specific ranks. For example, a player could be Silver 2 rank on Ancient and Legendary Eagle on Overpass. TLDR: CS Rating reflects your overall skill, while Competitive ranks show how you perform on each specific map.

Premier mode also boasts a map-veto phase at the start of a match similar to what you’ll see in top CS2 esports tournaments like the Thunderpick World Championship.

Let’s now dig deeper and take a look at the unique rankings systems for both modes.

Ranking Systems In CS2 Premier vs Competitive

One of the core differences between Competitive and Premier mode in CS2 is the ranking system, which indicates a player’s accomplishments and skill levels. Let’s start with the one that CS:GO fans should be familiar with: Competitive mode.

How Competitive Mode Ranking Works

Competitive mode assigns a separate rank for each map, letting you showcase strength on specific battlegrounds. For example, you could have entirely different ranks on Train and Mirage. You could start on Train and perform poorly, resulting in a Silver 2 rank, but then you could hold the rank of Distinguished Master Guardian on Mirage.

Competitive mode allows players to choose the maps they wish to play, and it provides for a map-by-map ranking that showcases skill on specific virtual battlegrounds.

There are 18 ranks in CS2’s Competitive mode, which players can grind through on each map, from Silver 1 to Global Elite. Check out all the ranks in order below.

Silver 1

Silver 2

Silver 3

Silver 4

Silver Elite

Silver Elite Master

Gold Nova 1

Gold Nova 2

Gold Nova 3

Gold Nova Master

Master Guardian 1

Master Guardian 2

Master Guardian Elite

Distinguished Master Guardian

Legendary Eagle

Legendary Eagle Master

Supreme Master First Class

Global Elite

How CS2 Premier Ranking Works

At its core, the CS2 Premier ranking, aka CS Rating, is an ELO-based system with an overall player rating front and center. Player skill level is evaluated holistically instead of on a per-map basis. Once you play 10 Premier Mode matches, your CS Rating will appear on your profile.

With a color-coded system, Valve has made identifying players of specific skill levels easier than ever before. For reference, check out the colors, corresponding CS Rating, and estimated translations into regular Ranks below.

CS Rating Range

CS Rating Color

Estimated CS2 Rank Comparison

1,000 – 4,999

Gray

Silver 1 to Silver Elite

5,000 – 9,999

Light Blue

Silver Elite Master to Master Guardian 1

10,000 – 14,999

Blue

Master Guardian 2 to Legendary Eagle

15,000 – 19,999

Purple

Legendary Eagle Master to Supreme Master First Class

20,000 – 24,999

Pink

Supreme Master First Class to Global Elite

25,000 – 29,999

Red

Global Elite

30,000+

Yellow

Beyond the regular Global Elite. Players can easily compare themselves to friends or others across the globe, thanks to Global, Regional, and Friends List leaderboards. The Global leaderboards showcase the top 1,000 players boasting the highest CS Rating.

Matchmaking Systems & Map Selection

With a clear understanding of how the unique ranking systems in both Premier and Competitive work, it’s time to dive into how the modes differ in terms of map selection and matchmaking.

Competitive Mode: Map Choice & Matchmaking

Players are matched in Competitive mode based on their rank on a per-map basis, hidden matchmaking ratings (MMR) based on performance, and the specific maps they’ve chosen. For example, suppose you decide to play on Mirage and Ancient, deselecting all other maps before queuing. In that case, CS2 will match you with other players who have Ancient and/or Mirage selected, are close to your current map ranking, and are in the same hidden MMR range.

In CS2 Competitive mode, gamers are spoiled for choice. The mode generally features 14 maps, including those in the Active Duty, Reserve Group, and Hostage Group map pools.

You need two wins on a map for your initial rank to appear. As you win more Competitive matches, your rank will increase. If you lose more often than you win on a map, your CS2 rank for that particular map will decrease.

Premier Mode: Map Veto & Matchmaking

CS2 uses an ELO-based system to determine a player’s CS Rating. Every Premier mode match will affect your CS Rating, either positively or negatively, depending on the outcome. Players are matched based on their CS Rating, as the game attempts to balance teams for the fairest competition possible.

While you may think matches seem unfair at the start of your Premier journey, the system becomes more accurate as you keep playing because it recalibrates after each win/loss.

You’ll see precisely how much CS Rating you stand to lose or gain at the start of each match. Not every win or loss will see the exact CS Rating change. The system is based on both team and individual performance. In the case of a loss, for example, if a player dies 20 times and scores only two kills, they’ll lose more CS Rating than a teammate who tops the leaderboard.

Premier mode further distinguishes itself from Competitive with a map veto system, where players vote to ban maps from the available Active Duty pool until one remains. Players ban six maps in total through several phases (25 seconds per phase), and it closely mirrors a best-of-one esports match.

Premier mode only features the current Active Duty maps. For the uninitiated, there are always seven maps in the Active Duty map pool. These are the maps that you’ll see featured in esports events. As an example, check out the Active Duty maps for Season 3, which began on July 15, 2025, below:

Ancient

Dust II

Inferno

Mirage

Nuke

Overpass

Train

Please note: Valve tends to change up one Active Duty map per season. For example, at the start of Season 3, Overpass replaced Anubis.

Key Advantages and Which Mode Should You Choose?

It is up to each player to choose which mode works best for them. For example, Premier Season 3 ended after the BLAST.tv Austin Major, with a couple of gameplay changes.

Why Can’t I See My CS Rating?

Your CS Rating could disappear from your profile due to inactivity or at the start of a new CS2 season. If a player’s CS Rating is below 20,000, it takes roughly 20 days of inactivity to become hidden.
