Have you seen terms like MMR thrown around but have no idea what they mean? If you’re wrestling with these questions, don’t worry, because we’ve got the details you need to get more familiar with this intimidating rating system.

Here’s everything to know about the Dota 2 ranks and how matchmaking rank affects your competitive games.

How Many Ranks Are There In Dota 2?

There are eight rank tiers in Dota 2, each based on a matchmaking rating (or “MMR”) that reflects a player’s skill level. All tiers—except for the highest rank, Immortal—are subdivided into five subranks, which players must progress through to be promoted to the next tier.

Here is a list of all the ranks in Dota 2:

Herald (1-5)

Guardian (1-5)

Crusader (1-5)

Archon (1-5)

Legend (1-5)

Ancient (1-5)

Divine (1-5)

Immortal

What Is Matchmaking Rating (MMR)?

MMR is a numerical rating system that quantifies a player’s skill level. Its main purpose is to facilitate fair and balanced matchmaking by pairing you with gamers who have a similar skill level. In most cases, your MMR will increase whenever you win a ranked game and drop when you lose.

How Does The Dota 2 Ranking System Work?

Since the New Frontiers update, Valve transitioned to a new rating system called Glicko, which added a “Rank Confidence” (RC) factor to MMR calculations. Instead of the old ELO system, which relied solely on wins and losses, Glicko considers how certain it is about your actual skill level.

With the Glicko system, RC increases after each ranked game (regardless of the outcome) and drops the longer you’re inactive. In matches where both teams have equal MMR and 100% RC, the MMR swing is ±25 per game. But if your RC is low, the MMR gains or losses are more dramatic.

If your RC falls below 30%, you’ll even lose your rank medal, requiring you to recalibrate to get it back. The key benefit here is accuracy because Glicko accounts for certainty. This leads to tighter matchmaking and quicker rating corrections when your gameplay performance changes.

This new ranking system also means Dota no longer features mandatory rank resets or rank seasons. In fact, players can opt into recalibration at any time once a year. To do this, go to the “Settings” > “Account” menu options and select “Activate Recalibration.”

ft. VALVE

How Do You Unlock Ranked Matches In Dota 2?

Unfortunately, you can’t jump into ranked games right away. You must meet several requirements before you can access Dota 2’s competitive lobbies.

Rank Mode Requirements

You must play at least 100 hours in unranked game modes (e.g., All Pick or Turbo). Considering that a standard match lasts 35-45 minutes, this means you’ll have to play roughly 50-100 matches.

You must link a phone number that’s not associated with any other Steam account. Valve added this requirement in 2017 to reduce smurfing and account boosting.

Calibration Matches

After meeting the requirements, you can join either Classic or Role Queue matches. You’ll initially be “Unranked” and will only get a starting rank when you reach 30% RC by playing enough calibration matches.

Regardless of the outcome (i.e., win or loss), you’ll get ~1-3% RC for every match played, meaning you’ll need to play roughly 10-30 Dota 2 games before your initial rank appears. At this point, you’ll also see your MMR and know how close you are to progressing to the next tier.

What’s Special About Immortal Rank In Dota 2?

The Immortal tier is reserved for the best Dota 2 players. This includes many pros, but also gamers with unmatched map awareness and an exceptional mastery of in-game mechanics.

Unlike the lower ranks, the top 5,000 Immortal players in each region (i.e., Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia, and China) are also ranked on Regional Leaderboards. To qualify for this distinction, you must have:

At least 300 lifetime matchmade games (in Unranked or Ranked PvP only)

A minimum of 100 lifetime ranked games

At least 14 calibrated ranked games in the last 21 days in the same division

Immortal players with more than 8,500 MMR (the top 0.5% of all players) will unlock a special mode called “Immortal Draft,” which allows them to pick and ban heroes in a Captains Mode style. This system emphasizes teamwork and ensures only the most skilled players can compete.

What’s The Latest Dota 2 Rank Distribution?

As of April 2025, Crusader is the most populated rank tier in Dota 2, accounting for 1.4 million players or 20.9% of the ranked player base. In contrast, the higher ranks (Ancient and above) make up only 17.5% of the ranked population—that’s less than 1 in 5 gamers at the top of the competitive ladder.

This table provides a more detailed breakdown of the rank distributions:

Rank Medal

MMR Range

Player Count

% Total

Herald 1

1-154

10,230

0.2%

Herald 2

154-308

180,592

2.7%

Herald 3

308-462

170,631

2.5%

Herald 4

462-616

190,429

2.8%

Herald 5

616-769

207,523

3.1%

Guardian 1

770-924

229,917

3.4%

Guardian 2

924-1078

243,630

3.6%

Guardian 3

1078-1232

254,865

3.8%

Guardian 4

1232-1386

261,349

3.9%

Guardian 5

1386-1540

269,149

4.0%

Crusader 1

1540-1694

284,675

4.2%

Crusader 2

1694-1848

284,901

4.2%

Crusader 3

1848-2002

283,778

4.2%

Crusader 4

2002-2156

279,747

4.1%

Crusader 5

2156-2310

272,372

4.0%

Archon 1

2310-2464

275,010

4.1%

Archon 2

2464-2618

260,832

3.9%

Archon 3

2618-2772

246,766

3.7%

Archon 4

2772-2926

230,205

3.4%

Archon 5

2926-3080

216,207

3.2%

Legend 1

3080-3234

217,450

3.2%

Legend 2

3234-3388

197,111

2.9%

Legend 3

3388-3542

178,524

2.6%

Legend 4

3542-3696

161,476

2.4%

Legend 5

3696-3850

146,827

2.2%

Ancient 1

3850-4004

148,312

2.2%

Ancient 2

4004-4158

128,121

1.9%

Ancient 3

4158-4312

111,416

1.7%

Ancient 4

4312-4466

97,301

1.4%

Ancient 5

4466-4620

86,109

1.3%

Divine 1

4620-4820

102,705

1.5%

Divine 2

4820-5020

87,315

1.3%

Divine 3

5020-5220

70,637

1.0%

Divine 4

5220-5420

56,568

0.8%

Divine 5

5420-5620

49,888

0.7%

Immortal Ranks

Placed

5620+

233,491

3.5%

Top 5000

Regional Leaderboard

20,000

0.3%

Top 1000

Regional Leaderboard

4,000

0.1%

Top 100

Regional Leaderboard

400

<0.01%

Top 10

Regional Leaderboard

40

<0.01%

Top 1

Regional Leaderboard

4

<0.01%

Note: Player rank distribution is based on third-party data from STRATZ.com, accurate as of April 9, 2025. Here are a few tips to improve your win rate in ranked matches.

1. Master 5-6 Dota 2 Heroes

Mastering a few heroes in Dota 2 with potent solo carry potential can drastically improve your chances of ranking up. Opt for resilient heroes who rebound swiftly when the chips are down. Ideal picks include damage dealers with impressive survivability or split-pushing ability.

2. Review Your Ranked Matches

You’re only as good as your weakest link! Watch replays of your ranked games and identify your mistakes. Better yet, engage in a self-dialog: Was it a good idea to play Riki Offlane? Did you need to buy two Boots of Speed? Learn from your mistakes and accept responsibility for your losses.

3. Hire A Coach

The insights you gain from an elite player can be a game-changer. Coaches can expedite the learning process by pointing out mistakes you would otherwise have taken months (or years) to recognize. This Dota 2 tip is especially beneficial to new players who don’t have years’ worth of bad habits to unlearn.

Playing And Betting On Dota 2 Ranked

That’s everything you need to know about the Dota 2 ranked system.
