League of Legends level borders are one of the easiest ways to tell how much time a player has invested in their account. While ranked borders reflect competitive performance, level borders tell an entirely different story, serving as a marker of experience and prestige (even if you’ve never touched soloQ).
In this guide, we’ll explain everything about League of Legends level borders, including what they are, why they’re special, how to unlock them, plus all the available designs once they’re added to your account.
What Are Level Borders In League of Legends?
Level borders are cosmetic frames that surround your summoner icon and loading screen card in League of Legends.
Unlike ranked borders, which reflect your ranked performance, level borders are linked to your account progression, acting as a visual marker of experience. With that in mind, a higher-level border simply shows that a player has spent more time levelling up their account, and nothing about their skill.
Level borders will unlock automatically at fixed account milestones as you accumulate experience points (XP). Once they’re unlocked, the border designs are permanently saved to your League account, and you can change them to a different, lower-level style by customizing your identity.
Importantly, level borders are strictly cosmetic features in League of Legends and do not improve your champions or affect their abilities. They also demand a tremendous amount of time and effort, with the final Eternus level border (unlocked at Level 500) taking many years to earn.

Level Borders And Account Progression
As of May 20, 2026, there are 21 level borders in League of Legends, though Riot could add more in the future.
The first two level borders unlock at Level 1 (Piltover) and Level 30 (Zaun). From there, a new style will unlock every 25 levels until you reach Level 500 (Eternus). Each border is inspired by the various regions, factions, and lore of Runeterra, and becomes progressively more detailed and ornate as you level up.
Here are all the League of Legends level borders and their respective level requirements:

How To Earn XP And Unlock Level Borders
To unlock new level borders in League of Legends, you must increase your summoner level by earning XP.
You can do this by (i) playing matches in eligible game modes like Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, or Arena, or (ii) completing daily missions and certain event objectives whenever they’re available. While you can buy XP boosts to speed up the process, XP cannot be purchased directly, traded, gifted, or acquired by any other means.

Each time your summoner level reaches one of these milestones, the matching level border will unlock automatically. This is separate from the temporary levels you gain during a match.
While champion levels and item builds reset after every match, your summoner level is permanent. It also accumulates continuously across your playtime, which means your level border will serve as a lifelong reflection of how much time you’ve spent in the game.
This makes level borders one of League’s clearest progression rewards, giving you a visible way to proudly show off your progress.
Level Borders Visibility and Customization
Level borders are visual representations of your progression and help other players instantly recognize your devotion to the game. They typically appear around your summoner icon but are also visible from your profile, lobby, friends list, and pre-game loading screen.
Similar to champion skins in League of Legends, there is no difference in gameplay for players with different borders.
Even if someone has the Blood Moon (Level 450) or Eternus (Level 500) styles unlocked, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re any good. This is because level borders don’t affect your champion’s strength, abilities, matchmaking, or performance. They only show that an account has reached a high summoner level.

How To Customize Level Borders In League of Legends
Once added, level borders are permanently saved to your account, meaning you can freely customize your summoner profile with older, lower-level designs you’ve already unlocked. That way, you can personalize how your profile and loading screen card appear to other League players.
To view or change your level borders, follow these steps:
- Launch the League of Legends client.
- Click on your avatar (top-right corner) from the main menu.
- Select the edit profile icon on your summoner profile.
- Go to the “Borders” tab.
- Choose your preferred level border.
Note: You cannot equip a level border you have not unlocked yet. Each design is linked to a summoner level requirement, which means you’ll have to grind XP and levels before higher-tier borders become available.

Level Borders In Game Modes And Presentation
Importantly, level borders are not linked to any specific game mode in League of Legends. They will look the same even if you’re playing Summoner’s Rift (ranked 5v5 or unranked), ARAM (all random, all mid), Arena (16-player team deathmatch), or any other eligible mode.
This is because level borders reflect your overall account experience, regardless of the game mode you’re playing.
As mentioned, level borders are also distinct from temporary in-game stats, such as champion levels, items, gold, kills, and assists, which reset after every match. Since your summoner level is persistent and level borders are linked to your account, they remain unchanged long after the victory screen.
That said, you shouldn’t confuse level borders with ranked borders or splash art borders on the loading screen, as they represent entirely different things. Level borders simply show your summoner level progression rather than your ranked tier, champion, or success in any particular match.
